Breastfeeding, Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Colostrum, and Infant Mental Development

Abstract: Greater levels of accumulated breastfeeding during the first year of life were related to higher mental development at 14 months, largely independently from a wide range of parental psychosocial factors. LC-PUFA levels seem to play a beneficial role in children's mental development when breastfeeding levels are high.

“…The results of the present study are in agreement with the few previous observational studies that investigated LCPUFA Articles levels in colostrum, transitional or mature breast milk, in relation with later child cognition, and that found no strong evidence for a beneficial role of LCPUFA, in order to explain the relationship between breastfeeding and cognition (12)(13)(14)(15)(16). Most of the literature on this topic comes from randomized controlled trials.…”

“…Such association was previously highlighted among 51 preterm infants of 6 mo of age (14). In other studies, authors reported negative associations between cognition and PUFA ratios, especially LA/ALA, AA/ DHA, and total n-6/n-3 (12,14,15). In our study, we observed a negative and significant association between total n-6/n-3 PUFA ratio and the ASQ-3 score, but this was not observed with Motor-2 and CDI-2.…”

“…137 LC-PUFA in colostrum may boost mental development in children who are breastfed for a prolonged duration. 138 Maternal hormones within the milk may also affect later offspring neurobehavioral functions. For instance, greater amount of cortisol in human milk appears to impact infant temperament, as evidenced by a positive association with negative affectivity or emotions in girls.…”

“…Some of the explanations for these associations may be the amount of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) in breast milk 36 , as well as the warning level that mothers might have in order to detect any psychomotor problem of their children and a greater orentation and stimulous to the development of the infant 37 .…”
