Breast tissue density change after oophorectomy in BRCA mutation carrier patients using visual and volumetric analysis

Abstract: At baseline, there was a non-significant trend for decreased density with increasing age. Volumetric breast density (VBD) significantly decreased after oophorectomy from a median VBD of 12.5% at baseline to 10.2% post-surgery which was driven by a reduction in fibroglandular volume. There was a higher absolute decrease in VBD in patients aged between 40-50 (p < 0.01). Using Volpara Density Grades (analogous to BI-RADS 4th edition density categories), 84% of females displayed a decrease in density category over… Show more

“…In addition, chemoprevention trials have shown that tamoxifen treatment is associated with decreasing breast density [ 33 – 35 ]. Also, surgical removal of both ovaries (bilateral oophorectomy) is associated with decreasing breast density [ 36 , 37 ]. However, there have been very limited studies in which other factors were examined for potential association with longitudinal changes in breast density.…”

“…Furthermore, younger high-risk women who may benefit from CESM screening are also a target population for prevention strategies. Mammographic VBD and measurements of fibroglandular volume have been demonstrated as useful markers of breast density change associated with interventions that include chemoprevention [ 46 , 47 , 48 ], oophorectomy [ 49 ], diet [ 50 ], and weight loss [ 51 ].…”
