Breast Reduction Trend among Plastic Surgeons: A National Survey

Abstract: In conclusion, the inferior pedicle technique has traditionally been the procedure of choice and remains so today. However, there has been an increase in the use of the newer techniques. Plastic surgeons are becoming more cognizant of the risk of deep venous thrombosis among their patients. The majority of breast reductions are now performed as outpatient procedures.

“…From the cohort of surgeons prescribing antibiotics in the United Kingdom, approximately two-thirds gave a single preoperative dose, whereas in the United States, over threequarters gave an extended postoperative course, for up to and beyond 21 days. 17,18 The aim of this review is to weigh the available evidence with respect to reducing surgicalsite infection in aesthetic breast surgery. Is there enough evidence to recommend the routine use of systemic antibiotic prophylaxis in reduction and augmentation mammaplasty and, if so, what is the most effective regimen?…”

“…However, the vertical scar techniques are increasing in popularity because of decreased scar burden and improved breast shape in the long term compared with the inverted-T techniques. 19 It is generally accepted that vertical mammaplasty is best suited for small to medium reductions, particularly in younger women with good skin elasticity and minimal to moderate ptosis. 6,13,16 It ap- Volume 127, Number 3 • Use of Suction-Assisted Lipectomy pears that the best candidate for vertical breast reduction will present with ideal breast features as dense consistency, excellent upper pole fullness, well-defined lateral border, and good skin elasticity.…”

“…The inverted-T, inferior pedicle reduction, described by Ribeiro, 29 Courtiss and Goldwyn, 30 and Robbins 14 in the 1970s, remains the most common breast reduction technique used in the United States, although the vertical technique is gaining popularity. 31 …”
