BREAST-Q Outcomes before and after Bilateral Reduction Mammaplasty

Abstract: Background: The BREAST-Q is the only questionnaire specific to bilateral breast reduction that was developed according to federal and international standards. Many payors mandate minimum resection weights for preapproval, despite lacking supportive evidence for this practice. This study aimed to assess changes in BREAST-Q scores after bilateral breast reduction, and determine whether compliance with Schnur requirements impacts improvement in patient-reported outcomes. … Show more

“…A bilateral procedure was significantly associated with “Psychosocial well-being” at 5 years after breast surgery. Several studies focusing on bilateral breast operations have concluded that “Psychosocial well-being” after surgery significantly improves compared to the preoperative level ( 54 , 55 ). These findings suggest that patients who underwent bilateral reconstruction were more satisfied due to improved symmetry and a superior aesthetic appearance.…”

“…Compared with a previous study on breast hypertrophy in Region Västra Götaland , the normative values were considerably higher in all domains (Table 1 ). Similarly, US studies on patients with beast hypertrophy have revealed lower scores (mean 20 to 46) than the norms [ 5 , 18 ]. Nonetheless, these studies were performed in patients who had actively requested breast surgery and they were therefore per definition dissatisfied with their breasts.…”

“…Several PROMs have been developed for breast hypertrophy, of which BREAST-Q is the most widely used [1,2]. PROMs consistently show that patients are more satisfied with their breasts and have a higher quality of life (QoL) after a breast reduction [3][4][5]. This effect can be seen both in breast reductions performed in the public health care system [3][4][5] as well as in privately financed aesthetic surgery [6,7], which makes it difficult to use improvement in patient satisfaction and QoL as indicators that the surgery should be performed in the publicly financed health care system [1].…”

“…Breast reduction or reduction mammaplasty offers relief from both physical and psychological macromastia-associated symptoms. Patients who underwent breast reduction due to macromastia felt overall satisfaction and symptomatic relief [ 2 , 3 , 5 , 6 , 7 ]. Numerous complications have been identified regarding breast reduction, but in most cases major complications are rare [ 6 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ].…”
