Breast Inflammatory Gigantomastia in a Context of Immune-Mediated Diseases

Abstract: We suggest that breast tissue may be a target tissue in autoimmune diseases, this process being favored by the hormonal milieu. However, the precise mechanism of such association is not individualized. The fact that stromal hyperplasia is the main histological feature justifies the search for the involvement of growth factors in such a process.

“…27 Some cases of gestational gigantomastia were observed in women with myasthenia gravis. 28,29 The association between gigantomastia and treatment with bucillamine, autoimmune and endocrine disorders has been noted previously for juvenile hypertrophy in the nonpregnancy setting. 23,[29][30][31] Rare cases of familial gigantomastia are described but there is no specific recorded association with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy.…”

[32][33][34] In our case, microscopic examination of both enlarged breasts revealed prominent fibrous mastopathy characterized by almost complete replacement of the stromal adipose tissue of the breast by dense acellular fibrous tissue ( Fig.…”

“…Further, autoimmune diseases, e.g. systemic lupus erythematodes, Hashimoto's thyreoiditis, psoriasis, or myasthenia gravis, can be accompanied by breast enlargement [23,24]. Penicillamine treatment, which is known to cause autoimmune side effects, can also result in breast enlargement [25].…”
