Breast Density Awareness and Knowledge, and Intentions for Breast Cancer Screening in a Diverse Sample of Women Age Eligible for Mammography

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to assess breast density knowledge and breast density awareness, and to identify information associated with intention to complete routine and supplemental screening for breast cancer in a diverse sample of women age eligible for mammography. We quantitatively (self-report) assessed breast density awareness and knowledge (N = 264) in black (47.7%), Latina (35.2%), and white (17%) women recruited online and in the community. “…A minority (44%) of women knew that higher breast density was a risk factor for BC, significantly more those aware of their BD. Comparison of our results with other previously published research is limited by the inconsistency of the definition of BD awareness and knowledge, which significantly differ between studies [ 18 , 19 , 27 , 32 , 33 ]. Also, these disparities may be attributed to study design and sampling methodology.…”

“…This information is of paramount importance in designing outreach efforts to encourage patients to resume breast cancer screening. Previous studies have suggested that several patient variables may affect patient breast cancer screening behaviors, including age [ 9 12 ], race [ 11 13 ], breast density [ 14 ], and socioeconomic variables [ 13 , 15 17 ].…”

“…With evidence of breast density as both an individual risk factor for breast cancer and a masking factor of mammo-graphic examination, the United States mandates nationwide that women are to be informed of their breast density status [4,7,8]. This was initially implemented in an attempt to increase female awareness of the importance of breast density in breast cancer; however, others argued that it could elicit unnecessary psychological responses among women [9][10][11].…”
