Breast carcinoma en Cuirasse - case report

Abstract: Cutaneous metastasis is a phenomenon that results from a tumor spreading via lymphatic or vascular embolization, direct implant during surgery or skin involvement by contiguity. The primary malignant tumor that most commonly metastasizes to the skin in women is breast cancer, which can be manifested through papulonodular lesions, erysipeloid or sclerodermiform infiltration, en cuirasse. We report the case of a female patient, 78 years old, with papular, scaly and confluent lesions in the right breast for one y… Show more

“…The histopathological findings of cutaneous metastases in breast cancer have been classified under 5 headings: inflammatory carcinoma, where the dermal lymphatics are swollen with tumor cells; telangiectatic carcinoma, where only the superficial lymphatics are filled with tumor cells; nodular carcinoma, which consists of large and small tumor islets surrounded by fibrosis on the dermis; and cancer en cuirasse, a form of hematogenous metastasis with histopathological manifestations that vary depending on the clinical picture, and with tumor cells aligned in a single row between thick collagen bands. [13] Lymphovascular invasion of neoplastic cells of invasive ductal carcinoma was found in both of the presented cases.…”

“…[11] Carcinoma en cuirasse is an unusual skin metastasis of breast cancer with diffuse carcinomatous cutaneous and subcutaneous infiltration that may affect the chest and abdomen, by extension. [8] Reich et al have reported a case of carcinoma en cuirasse as an initial clinical manifestation of breast cancer in a woman with 15-month history of asymptomatic, previously untreated erythematous and indurated skin lesions of the right chest. [12] Our eighth case had a similar clinical presentation of diffuse erythematous skin thickening involving mastectomy scar site, but imaging features were not favouring malignancy.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] Breast cancer, however, is not only the most common cancer among women, but it is the most common malignancy with metastases to the skin in women. Lookingbill et al showed that breast cancer accounted for 51% of all cases of patients with cutaneous metastases from metastatic carcinoma, and 73% of all cases in women, with the most common sites of cutaneous metastases being the chest and abdomen.…”

“…Cutaneous metastases from internal malignancies account for 0.7%-9% of all metastases. [1][2][3][4][5] Lookingbill et al showed that breast cancer was the most common malignancy with breast cancer alone accounting for 51% of all cases of patients with cutaneous metastases from metastatic carcinoma, and 73% of all cases in women. [2] Carcinoma en cuirasse, also known as scirrhous carcinoma, pachydermia, Acarcine eburnee, [6] is a type of cutaneous metastases with a distinctive clinical presentation.…”
