Breast Cancer Therapeutics and Biomarkers: Past, Present, and Future Approaches

Abstract: Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of cancer death in women and the second-most common cancer. An estimated 281 550 new cases of invasive BC will be diagnosed in women in the United States, and about 43 600 will die during 2021. Continual research has shed light on all disease areas, including tumor classification and biomarkers for diagnosis/prognosis. As research investigations evolve, new classes of drugs are emerging with potential benefits in BC treatment that are covered in this manuscript. The init… Show more

“…The availability of relevant biomarkers used for BRCA patients’ classification, diagnosis and prognosis, and therapeutic options have increased significantly over the last decade [ 41 ]. Recent advances on next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques, together with the decrease of NGS associated costs, have tremendously expanded the use of RNA-seq in clinical practice, leading to the production of a large amount of expression datasets whose information has still only in part decoded.…”

“…Despite significant recent progress in diagnosis and therapy, breast cancer is still a serious problem for individuals and societies (reviewed in [ 1 ]). There are several reasons for this, including heterogeneity of cases and poorly understood mechanisms of breast cancer pathogenesis.…”
