Breast Cancer Incidence, 1980 2006: Combined Roles of Menopausal Hormone Therapy, Screening Mammography, and Estrogen Receptor Status

Abstract: From 1980 through 2006, quantitative and qualitative trends in breast cancer incidence rates, particularly for ER+ tumors, parallel major changes in patterns of mammography screening and use of menopausal hormone therapy.

“…Como se ha demostrado, este estudio de imagen y el tratamiento específico son los mejores instrumentos para reducir la mortalidad relacionada con esta neoplasia. 18,19 No obstante, no ocurre así en países de América Latina, donde se observa un incremento sostenido de las tasas de mortalidad. 20 En México se inició un programa organizado de mastografía para cáncer de mama.…”

“…The progression of human breast cancer from an estrogen-dependent to an estrogen-independent form and more aggressive phenotype represents a major clinical problem that limits the long-term usefulness of endocrine therapeutic strategies (Ingle, 2004;Glass et al, 2007). Among estrogens, 17-b estradiol is the major promoter of cell proliferation in both normal and neoplastic breast tissue through its binding to the highaffinity estrogen receptor (ERa).…”

“…In the 1990s, many countries experienced substantial increases in breast cancer incidence (Chu et al, 1996;Botha et al, 2003), whereas since 2002, it has fallen in the USA (Ravdin et al, 2007), both being subjects of the study (Glass et al, 2007). The recent decline was mostly attributed to a lower prevalence of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use (Ravdin et al, 2007), whereas the levelling off of screening mammography rates in the late 1990s has been suggested as contributing (Glass et al, 2007).…”

“…The recent decline was mostly attributed to a lower prevalence of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use (Ravdin et al, 2007), whereas the levelling off of screening mammography rates in the late 1990s has been suggested as contributing (Glass et al, 2007). In relation to increased incidence in the 1990s, this is usually attributed to the introduction of mammographic screening (Jonsson et al, 2005;Seppänen et al, 2006).…”
