Breast Cancer in Morocco: A Literature Review

Abstract: In Morocco, breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in women and a major public health problem. Several Moroccan studies have focused on studying this disease, but more are needed, especially at the genetic and molecular levels. It is therefore interesting to establish the genetic and molecular profile of Moroccan patients with breast cancer. In this paper, we will highlight some pertinent hypotheses that may enhance breast cancer care in Moroccan patients. This review will give a precise description of bre… Show more

“…Despite the availability of substantial information regarding cancer risks in BRCA1/2 PSV carriers, the amount of information available to suggest that this PSV arose no more than 1500 years ago, suggesting that it was transmitted from the middle east to Africa, and did not arise there before the original migration of individuals out of Africa (Laitman et al, 2013). However, this PSV has been reported in native Africans (Zoure et al, 2018) and has arisen in multiple populations independently, so it is not known whether this PSV is a new PSV at a locus that demonstrates high mutation rates, or if it is the common Jewish founder PSV, which has been observed in Middle Eastern or North African populations (Laitman et al, 2013;Slaoui et al, 2014;Zoure et al, 2018).…”

“…Highest rates were seen in North America and Western Europe, and lower rates observed in Japan (Aliasghar, 2014;Ramesh, 2014). Prevalence of this cancer is lower in Asian countries compare to developed countries, but it is increasing (Aliasghar et al, 2014;Slaoui et al, 2014). In Iran, the highest rate of breast cancer was observed in Tehran (55.8/10 5 ) and Khuzestan (41/10 5 ) provinces (Kaviani, 2011).…”

“…Interestingly, the average age of onset in this region is more than 10 years below that of Western countries . In Morocco, average onset occurs at 48 years, with 7% of cases diagnosed at less than 35 years . In addition, the size and grade of breast tumors at diagnosis are higher in North Africa than elsewhere .…”

“…Therefore, the identification and geographic mapping of founder mutations can lead to cheaper and quicker mutational screening of high‐risk patients. However, to date, only one founder BRCA1 mutation (c.798_799delTT) specific to North African populations has been described .…”
