Breast cancer: Global patterns of incidence, mortality, and trends.

Abstract: 10528 Background: The global burden of cancer incidence and mortality including that of female breast cancer continues to increase largely because of the growth and aging of the population and adoption of western lifestyle behaviors that increase cancer risk. In this study, we summarize the current burden, trends, and survivorship of female breast cancer that account for nearly 12% of the cancer burden worldwide. Methods: Estimates of incidence and mortality in the year 2020 were obtained from Global Cancer O… Show more

“…Over 2.2 million new cases and 685,000 deaths from breast cancer occurred globally that year [ 1 ]. It was estimated that in 2040, over 2.9 million new cases of breast cancer were to occur worldwide [ 2 ]. Besides, of all cancers, breast cancer was estimated to incur the third largest economic cost from 2020 to 2050, accounting for 7.7% of the global cost of cancers [ 3 ].…”

“…Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women worldwide and the leading cause of cancer death, with an estimated 2.3 million new cancer cases and 685,000 cancer deaths in 2020. Breast cancer cases in women are expected to increase by 31% in 2040 compared to 2020 ( 2 ). Based on expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), breast cancer can be categorized into the molecular subtypes of HER2-positive (ER-negative, PR-negative, and HER2-positive), luminal A (ER-positive and/or PR-positive and HER2-negative), luminal B (ER-positive and/or PR-positive and HER2-positve), and triple-negative (ER-negative, PR-negative, and HER2-negative) ( 3 ).…”
