Breast Cancer Drug Repurposing a Tool for a Challenging Disease

Abstract: Drug repurposing is one of the best strategy for drug discovery. There are several examples where drug repurposing has revolutionized the drug development process, such as metformin developed for diabetes and is now employed in polycystic ovarian syndrome. Drug repurposing against breast cancer is currently a hot topic to look upon. With the continued rise in breast cancer cases, there is a dire need for new therapies that can tackle it in a better way. There is a rise of resistance to current therapies, so dr… Show more

“…Therefore, miRNA profiling and comprehension are crucial for BC diagnosis, subtyping, prognosis, and recurrence and treatment response prediction. Additionally, numerous anti-oncomiRs and tumor suppressor miRNAs have been created as treatments that can be used alone or in conjunction with conventional BC therapy [ 129 ]. They can be discharged in liquid biopsy samples including urine, blood, milk, and other physiological fluids.…”

“…In such cases, drug repurposing or reprofiling can play a vital role by reducing developmental drug costs and manufacturing time. For example, Aspirin, Metformin, Niclosamide, Itraconazole, and Simvastatin are some of the non-oncological drugs that have been repurposed for BC treatment [153].…”

“…Many noteworthy examples have revolutionized the drug discovery process by drug repurposing. Several drugs already approved for other ailments are also approved for cancer. , Although the success rate may not be high, research is about finding novel ideas and rediscovering things to serve humanity. There are many examples where drug repurposing was successful but seldom passed in clinical or preclinical phases.…”
