Breast cancer, cytomegalovirus and Epstein–Barr virus: a nested case–control study

Abstract: BACKGROUND: We investigated whether elevation in serum cytomegalovirus (CMV) or Epstein -Barr virus (EBV) immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody levels precedes the development of breast cancer. METHODS: A nested case -control study was carried out within the Janus Serum Bank cohort. Two serum samples, one taken at least 4 years before diagnosis (sample 2) and an earlier sample (sample 1) from 399 women with invasive breast cancer and from 399 controls, matched for date of blood samples and age were tested for CMV an… Show more

“…Increasing evidence implicates HCMV in the etiopathogenesis of breast cancer. Elevation in serum HCMV IgG antibody levels is reported to precede the development of breast cancer [12]. Evidence of viral expression has been found in over 97% of neoplastic breast epithelium [13].…”

“…In 2005 in Turkey, Kallkan et al demonstrated no etiological role for EBV in breast cancer [6]. Similarly, in 2010 in New Zealand, Cox et al reported no association between changes in EBV IgG antibody and the risk of breast cancer [7].…”

“…Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) has been detected in glioblastoma multiforme 14,15 , medulloblastoma 16 , neuroblastoma 17 , colon cancer 18,19 , and prostate cancer 20 , as well as in primary BC and sentinel lymph nodes and distant metastases from BC patients [21][22][23] . In general, increased viral activity is associated with worse prognosis.…”
