Breast Cancer Biology: The Multifaceted Roles of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

Abstract: Recent upsurge in the interest of breast cancer metastasis is partly attributed to the discovery of novel, yet unclear, mechanisms of breast cancer interaction with sites of distant metastasis such as the bone marrow microenvironment. In this review, we discuss the significance of the interactions between breast cancer cells and cells of the bone marrow. This is a subject of intense research studies aim to provide new methods of treatments and perhaps the identification of new drug targets. This review also di… Show more

“…VEGF and IL‐8 regulate not only cancer initiation but also progression. TGF‐β has a bimodal action on cancer, it alters the microenvironment and immune responses to provide favorable conditions for cancer maintenance; however it also acts as a tumor suppressor 64. TGF‐β2 is a potent regulator of osteoclastic bone resorption,65 production of matrix metalloproteinase‐9 and epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition 66.…”

“…MiRNAs have also been proposed to serve as the link between cancer and chronic inflammation, although the precise role of miRNAs in these biological processes remains unclear. 80 Histone modifications. The post-translational acetylation and methylation of lysine residues in histone tails is another epigenetic process that can regulate gene expression.…”
