Breast cancer

Abstract: Breast cancer is a complex disease and treatment recommendations are continually changing. It is the leading cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer mortality. This overview of breast cancer will discuss pathologic features, local and systemic treatment considerations, endocrine therapy, metastatic treatment regimens, and follow-up for optimal breast health. Recent approvals that advance the treatment of metastatic breast cancer are also addressed.

“…Aromatase inhibitors, such as anastrozole, letrozole, and exemestane, are prescribed for postmenopausal women with breast cancer and function by inhibiting aromatization, the conversion of androgens to estrogen in extragonadal tissues, the predominant source of estrogen in postmenopausal women. As a consequence, plasma estrogen levels are significantly reduced (Downs-Holmes & Silverman, 2011; Sainsbury, 2013). …”

“…Breast cancer is a complex disease and is the second leading cause of cancer mortality among women worldwide [1]. Several lines of evidence suggest that, in contrast to the bulk of the tumor, a subset of cancer cells is characterized by the property of self-renewal, unlimited proliferative potential, expression of multidrug-resistance proteins, active DNA repair capacity, apoptosis resistance, and an enormous developmental plasticity [2-7].…”

“…Breast cancer in women is the second leading cause of mortality [1]. The etiology of breast cancer involves several risk factors, such as early age at menarche, late age at menopause, late age at first birth, nulliparity, hormonal factors, ionizing radiation exposure and alcohol consumption [2,3].…”
