Breakthrough of 2‐ to 3‐μm scale U–Pb zircon dating using Cameca IMS‐1280HR SIMS

Abstract: A zircon U–Pb dating method with a high spatial resolution of 2‐ to 3‐μm was successfully implemented by using Cameca IMS‐1280HR SIMS in this study. Homemade cathode and modified intermediate pole were used to improve the intrinsic performance of duoplasmatron ion source. An O− primary beam with intensity of approximately 3 μA and stability of 0.68% over 40 minutes was achieved and could be used continuously for more than 240 hours under high current conditions. Under Gaussian illumination mode, a 2‐ to 3‐μm O… Show more

“…The primary beam setting is described in detail in ref. 39 . The multi-collector mode with five electron multipliers with low noise (less than 0.001 cps, especially for L2) was used to measure 204 Pb + (L2), 206 Pb + (L1), 207 Pb + (C), 208 Pb + (H1) and 96 Zr 2 16 O 2 + (H2).…”

“…Using recent SIMS dating techniques with a small primary beam size of ≤5 lm (Liu et al, 2011(Liu et al, , 2020Yang et al, 2012;Zhang et al, 2019;Zhou et al, 2013), (Jolliff et al, 2000;Xu et al, 2021). KREEP is an acronym for potassium, rare earth elements (RREs), and phosphorus.…”

“…Using recent SIMS dating techniques with a small primary beam size of ≤5 μm (Liu et al., 2011, 2020; Yang et al., 2012; Zhang et al., 2019; Zhou et al., 2013), micro‐zircon‐bearing lunar rocks can be dated with high precision. In this study, we use NanoSIMS (nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry) to date micro‐zircons (<20 μm) in two lunar feldspathic meteorites, Dhofar 1528 and Dhofar 1627, providing the first geochronological records for these two meteorites.…”

“…For example, the combination of micro-X-ray fluorescence (μXRF), 3D X-ray microscopy (XRM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has supported the rapid screening and positioning of Zrbearing minerals for U-Pb dating. 17 The high spatial resolution U-Pb dating method 18 by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) makes it possible to determine the crystallization age of tiny (< 5 μm) Zr-bearing minerals in CE-5 basalt. 7 The Sr-Nd isotopic methods 19−21 using laser ablation-inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) obtained key evidence for the non-KREEP origin of CE-5 basalt.…”
