Breakthrough in Milling Technology for Sidetracking Corrosion-Resistant Alloy Casing/Liner Applications with 28% Chrome Content - A Successful Case Study

Abstract: Corrosion-resistant alloy (CRA) casing, especially high-chrome steel casing, has been widely used for deepwater wells because of the severely corrosive environment. Although sidetracking through standard low-alloy casings or liners is a common practice, milling high-chrome steel casing has proven to be challenging due to its higher hardness and significant work-hardening. Operators around the globe are looking for an effective solution to sidetrack through high-chrome casing. Sidetracking from C… Show more

“…Section milling has a large window area and is convenient for later sidetracking operations; however, section milling is opened by hydraulic pressure, and the application of the well depth is limited [19,20], (only suitable for well depths less than 5700 m). Cone milling has the advantages of no electronic and transmission components, strong temperature and pressure resistance, simple operation, and a high success rate; therefore, it is suitable for deep wells [21,22].…”
