In the fields of metal production, surface finishing, and electronic device manufacturing, achieving precise control over electrochemical processes is crucial for product quality, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness. This paper introduces an open-source modeling tool based on a dynamic mesh technique built on the finite volume method using the C++ toolbox OpenFOAM. This tool has been validated against both newly proposed analytical solutions and existing numerical and experimental results in various conditions and kinetic controls. The analytical solution predicts the electrode surface position, current, or cell voltage difference for confined electrodes. It considers primary and secondary current distributions with linear kinetics under different electric control modes. Notably, the validation highlights the congruence of the new method with prior studies and underscores its potential to offer enhanced predictive capabilities. Furthermore, this work extends beyond traditional modeling approaches by incorporating pulse reverse plating, which has been successfully modeled using the dynamic mesh method. Additionally, a modified Wagner number ("W" "a" _"PR" ) is proposed to predict in advance the optimal conditions for achieving a more uniform deposit. This innovative approach contributes to the advancement of theoretical understanding and will improve practical applications in electrochemical deposition and dissolution processes.

This installment of the semi-regular column on patent law looks at patent citations as a way to discover new technical opportunities and new collaborators. During the prosecution of a patent application, the examiner identifies and cites prior art in terms of “background” art or art that impacts the patentability of the subject patent application. Additionally, once a patent issues, it becomes part of the “prior art” landscape and may be cited during the prosecution of subsequent patent applications as a forward citation. A case study is presented illustrating the use of forward citations of a patent licensed for electrochemically polishing stainless steel valves to discover a previously unknown application for electrochemically polishing medical stents. Electrochemical scientists, engineers and technologists are encouraged to regularly review patent literature in addition to the review of scholarly literature.

To improve the reliable integration of additively manufactured (AM) metal components, there is an urgent need for surface finishing methods capable of processing rough, ''as-printed'' surfaces. We present a new and scalable electropolishing (EP) technique for use on AM 316L stainless steel (SS) that is capable of achieving a surface roughness equivalent to a machined finish, with arithmetic mean heights (S a ) as low as 1.0 lm. This technique utilizes the sequential application of a new, NaCl/H 2 O pulse/pulse reverse (P/PR) EP step along with a conventional DC (direct current) EP step, where P/PR expands the capability of EP by removing roughness features > 1 lm, which has been previously unattainable with DC EP alone without substantial material removal. This is achieved by independently varying pulse parameters, such as pulse width and height, allowing more control over electrodynamic processes at the part-electrolyte interface. Additionally, P/PR EP resulted in higher smoothing efficiency, where a higher degree of smoothing was achieved with less material removal when compared with conventional DC EP alone. This minimizes unwanted change in geometry from excessive metal dissolution.
