The sterile insect technique (SIT) is being applied against fruit fly pests in many areas of the world. Currently, factories have a capacity to produce several billion sterile insects per week, to irradiate them and to make them available for shipment to their destinations. There the emerging flies are fed and maintained for various periods of time in fly emergence and release facilities, and then collected for release. While much research effort has been invested in improving mass rearing and quality control procedures at the fly factory level, the post‐factory handling of sterile flies has received much less attention. A 6‐year FAO/IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP) was initiated with the participation of 31 research institutes from 17 countries to assess and validate ways to improve sterile male performance through better management during the critical period that starts with the arrival of pupae at the fly emergence and release facility and ends with the release of the sterile flies in the field. This review summarizes the research that was conducted under the CRP focusing on fruit fly species from the genera Anastrepha, Bactrocera and Ceratitis against which the SIT is being applied. To increase the effectiveness of SIT programmes, exposure of sterile males to nutritional, hormonal and semiochemical supplements was assessed and improved handling and release methods tested. Incorporation of protein and juvenile hormone into pre‐release diets significantly accelerated sterile male maturation and improved sexual performance among several species, while semiochemical treatments using ginger root oil or citrus oils in Ceratitis capitata and methyl eugenol in Bactrocera dorsalis complex species significantly increased sterile male mating competitiveness. Improved fly emergence, holding and release procedures were also assessed, together with the compilation of all this knowledge into a manual. Several of these findings have been transferred to and are being applied in operational programmes.

Si bien este tiempo puede ser utilizado para brindar a los machos condiciones que favorezcan su competitividad en el campo como son la exposición a volátiles que les confieren mayor competitividad sexual ) o una dieta con proteínas (Yuval et al 2007), es cierto que periodos largos pueden ser contraproducentes ya que se necesita espacio para mantener a las moscas y se incrementa la mortalidad por lo que se intenta reducir dichos tiempos mediante el uso de aceleradores del proceso de maduración sexual como es el metropeno, análogo de la hormona juvenil (Faria et al 2008). Se evaluó por medio de pruebas estándar de control de calidad el desempeño sexual de machos de cría estériles de Anastrepha obliqua aclimatados bajo condiciones de campo. Machos esté-riles de cría de laboratorio fueron mantenidos en un huerto de mango en jaulas de madera durante 0, 2, 4, 6 y 8 días antes de competir con machos silvestres por hembras silvestres en pruebas de desempeño sexual. Los machos de laboratorio fueron evaluados con 8 días de edad mientras los silvestres con 15 días. Este estudio fue conducido para confirmar si los insectos mantenidos lo más cerca posible a las condiciones naturales, obtienen una ventaja en su desempeño sexual con respecto a machos mantenidos en condiciones artificiales. Los resultados del estudio indicaron que la proporción de apareamientos en la prueba fue satisfactoria y los valores del índice de esterilidad relativa no muestran diferencias significativas entre los distintos tratamientos. En conclusión los datos indican que el pre-acondicionamiento de machos de A. obliqua a condiciones de campo no confiere una ventaja en el desempeño sexual con hembras silvestres en jaulas de campo, lo cual es ideal para los programas de liberación donde la técnica del insecto estéril es aplicada. Ceratitis capitata (medfly) is a globally important horticultural pest that can be controlled using the sterile insect technique (SIT), but the success of SIT depends on the sexual performance of mass-reared males when released into the field. We added "guarana" (Paullinia cupana) powder (derived from an Amazonian fruit that is considered to be a stimulant with aphrodisiac effects, capable of improving human physical stamina) to the diets of adult male medflies to determine whether it increased their sexual performance. The basic diet of a protein extract + sucrose (1:3) was enriched with guarana powder (3 % on a volume basis). Experiments examining sexual competitiveness were performed using lab-reared males fed with the enriched diet vs.lab-reared males fed on the basic diet (and lab-reared females fed on the basic diet), as well as lab-reared males fed with the enriched diet vs. wild males fed on the basic diet (and wild females fed on the basic diet). The results of both experiments indicated that males maintained on diets enriched with guarana powder showed higher copulation successes than males fed only with the basic diet. Guarana powder therefore contributed to the greater mating success of lab-reared males (probably because of its stimulant properties), and may represent a new and viable option for increasing SIT effectiveness.
