Breakdown voltage of compressed SF6 at very low frequency/low frequency (VLF/LF)

Abstract: SUMMARY The breakdown voltage (BDV) of compressed sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) in the pressure range of 1–5 atm at 30 kHz, the frequency used by Navy for communications with vessels, is presented. Experiments were conducted in both uniform field (plane–plane gap) and non‐uniform field (rod–plane gap). The impact of pressure on the BDV is quantitatively analyzed. The pressure correction factors for calculating the BDV of SF6 at 30 kHz have been developed from knowledge of breakdown characteristics of air and from … Show more

“…Fig. 5 displays comparison between results of measurements performed at a fixed gap size by varying pressure (symbols) [15] and results achieved by derived expression 6).The gap lengths were put to be 0.15 cm, 0.25 cm and 0.50cm, respectively. At each gap, the pressure was set from varied 1atm to 5atm by using 1atm increment.…”

“…Results obtained by expression (5) are shown by dot curve, while solid curve correspond to the theoretical prediction (6). Experimental data for 0.25cm [15] Experimental data for 0.50cm [15] Theoretical prediction for 0. The values of the ionization coefficient in microgaps can be estimated based on the values measured in macrogaps in accordance with the relation [41]:…”
