Brazilian Maternal and Child Nutrition Consortium: establishment, data harmonization and basic characteristics

Abstract: Pooled data analysis in the field of maternal and child nutrition rarely incorporates data from low- and middle-income countries and existing studies lack a description of the methods used to harmonize the data and to assess heterogeneity. We describe the creation of the Brazilian Maternal and Child Nutrition Consortium dataset, from multiple pooled longitudinal studies, having gestational weight gain (GWG) as an example. Investigators of the eligible studies published from 1990 to 2018 were invited to partici… Show more

“…This study uses data from the Brazilian Maternal and Child Nutrition Consortium (BMCNC), which combines individual patient data with repeated measurements of weight during pregnancy from 21 Brazilian studies conducted between 1990–2018. Details of the cohort creation and steps taken to harmonize key variables, such as gestational age, weight, and self-reported weight have been reported elsewhere ( 21 ).…”

“…This study used data from two different sources, namely a research dataset from the Brazilian Maternal and Child Nutrition Consortium (BMCNC) [ 15 ], and an administrative dataset from the National Food and Nutritional Surveillance System (SISVAN, from the Portuguese acronym). The analyses were restricted to apparently healthy women (no indication of infectious or chronic diseases – except obesity - before pregnancy), aged 18–49 years.…”

“…The steps for harmonization and combination of datasets for the BMCNC are described elsewhere [ 15 ]. The harmonized and cleaned dataset included 17,344 women.…”
