Brassinosteroid: a biotechnological target for enhancing crop yield and stress tolerance

Abstract: Brassinosteroids (BRs) are a group of naturally occurring plant steroidal compounds with wide ranging biological activity. Because BRs control several important agronomic traits such as flowering time, plant architecture, seed yield and stress tolerance, the genetic manipulation of BR biosynthesis, conversion or perception offers a unique possibility of significantly increasing crop yields through both changing plant metabolism and protecting plants from environmental stresses. Genetic manipulation of BR activ… Show more

“…the molecular mechanisms and signal transduction pathways of BRs have been intensively studied in recent years (29,30). Recently, several BR-regulated genes associated with diverse physiological responses, such as cell division and expansion, differentiation, programmed cell death, stomatal development and functions, homeostasis and gene expression have been isolated by genome-wide microarray analysis (8,27). Mazorra et al (15) reported the ability of brassinosteroids in imparting drought tolerance in groundnut.…”

“…Steroids have the potential to improve intrinsic seed yield significantly. These are capable of increasing plant tolerance/resistance to a wide range of biotic and abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, heat, cold, virus infection, and pathogen attack etc [13].…”

“…The synthesis of brassinosteroid analogues confirming the structure-activity relationship provides a method for preparing large amounts of active brassinosteroids for use and evaluation greenhouse and field level. Extensive testing of a synthetic brassinosteroid, 24 epibrassinolide in China, Japan and Russia showed that despite being an exogenous compound has the ability to increase performance in a variety of plant species, the results are variable depending on the mode application, growth stage and environmental conditions (Divi and Krishna, 2009;Izquierdo, 2011).…”
