Brane Inflation: String Theory Viewed from the Cosmos

Abstract: Brane inflation is a specific realization of the inflationary universe scenario in the early universe within the brane world framework in string theory. The naturalness and robustness of this realistic scenario is explained. Its predictions on the cosmological observables in the cosmic microwave background radiation, especially possible distinct stringy features, such as large non-Gaussianity or large tensor mode that deviates from that predicted in the slow roll scenario, are discussed. Stringy KK modes as hi… Show more

“…The higher curvature terms may offer the alternative to the use of dynamical moduli, warped compactifications, or engineering desirable brane configurations [2,3,12], since all those popular mechanisms need many ad hoc assumptions about a non-perturbative off-shell effective action of M-theory, while no explanation is provided why certain brane configurations are to be considered and how they arise.…”

“…It is therefore of both theoretical and observational interest to look for inflationary properties that are, or will be in a foreseeable future, significant enough in the data to allow disambiguation between the different models. Many works are devoted to this task ranging from the details of the reheating era to the search of a theoretical embedding of inflation in supersymmetry or string theory [2,3,4,5]. In the following, we will be interested in the model disambiguation problem through the cosmological perturbations and the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) anisotropies.…”
