BCI is a rapidly growing field within biomedical engineering as it enables a direct connection between the central nervous system and an external device. BCI detects brain signals using biosensors (electrodes) installed on the head’s scalp or implanted inside the brain. EEG is a non-invasive method for detecting and monitoring the brain’s activity. Using EEG-based BCI in the medical field can significantly help disabled people to perform daily activities. In this context, it is very important to support and enable paralysed people to interact with multimedia devices like televisions by developing suitable solutions. This paper proposes an EEG mind-controlled TV remote control system prototype. The proposed prototype uses affordable hardware components to perform its task. A quantitative questionnaire has been conducted to identify the system’s functional and non-functional requirements. The system can send four different signals to power on/off, change the channel, raise and reduce the volume of the TV. The system has been tested by 20 subjects. The testing results show that the accuracy of the system is 74.9%. Despite the system being able to control only four TV functions, the system is scalable, and more commands can be added in the future. Also, using Raspberry Pi in the system gives a great possibility to eliminate the computer and to use Raspberry Pi directly with the headset. This paper demonstrates the approach’s feasibility and opens the route for enhancing the system and using EEG-based BCI with more and different devices.

This narrative review summarizes the latest advances in cerebral palsy and identifies where more research is required. Several studies on cerebral palsy were analyzed to generate a general idea of the prevalence of, risk factors associated with, and classification of cerebral palsy (CP). Different classification systems used for the classification of CP on a functional basis were also analyzed. Diagnosis systems used along with the prevention techniques were discussed. State-of-the-art treatment strategies for CP were also analyzed. Statistical distribution was performed based on the selected studies. Prevalence was found to be 2-3/1000 lives; the factors that can be correlated are gestational age and birth weight. The risk factors identified were preconception, prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal categories. According to the evidence, CP is classified into spastic (80%), dyskinetic (15%), and ataxic (5%) forms. Diagnosis approaches were based on clinical investigation and neurological examinations that include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), biomarkers, and cranial ultrasound. The treatment procedures found were medical and surgical interventions, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, umbilical milking, nanomedicine, and stem cell therapy. Technological advancements in CP were also discussed. CP is the most common neuromotor disability with a prevalence of 2-3/1000 lives. The highest contributing risk factor is prematurity and being underweight. Several preventions and diagnostic techniques like MRI and ultrasound were being used. Treatment like cord blood treatment nanomedicine and stem cell therapy needs to be investigated further in the future to apply in clinical practice. Future studies are indicated in the context of technological advancements among cerebral palsy children.

Voice Assistant Utilization among the Disability Community for Independent Living: A Rapid Review of Recent Evidence

The rapid advancement and widespread adoption of voice assistance technology have shown promise in benefiting individuals with disabilities, offering increased social participation, independence, and leisure activities. However, barriers to their full utilization have been identified, leading to potential abandonment by users with disabilities. This rapid review is aimed at filling the gap in the literature by investigating the utilization of voice assistants among people with disabilities for independent living and community participation. A comprehensive search was conducted in academic literature databases, including PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science, and gray data was sourced from public social media domains through Infegy. The analysis included 48 articles and 281 social media posts that met the inclusion criteria. Neurodiversity, disabilities affecting vision, and general disabilities were the most frequently discussed categories in both sources. The most common tasks performed using voice assistants were interface control, reminders, and environmental control, with a focus on enabling independence. Barriers to use mentioned in the literature included cognitive load during use, speech interpretation, lack of nonverbal control, and privacy concerns, while gray data reported limited functionality and speech interpretation as primary barriers. Amazon Alexa was the most discussed brand in both sources. The findings highlight the need for further research and innovation to fully harness the potential benefits of voice assistants for individuals with disabilities. By addressing the identified barriers and tailoring voice assistance technology to cater to the specific needs of different disability types, this technology can become a powerful tool for enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities and promoting greater independence and community participation.
