Brain Natriuretic Peptide and Atrial Natriuretic Peptide Levels in Normal Pregnancy and Preeclampsia

Abstract: Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) was increased in many hypertensive subjects. In this study, we have evaluated maternal, umbilical plasma and amniotic fluid BNP and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) in 19 normotensive pregnant women and in 35 preeclamptic patients. The maternal plasma and umbilical cord plasma ANP (p < 0.05) and BNP (p < 0.005) levels were significantly higher than those in normal pregnancy. There was no significant correlation among ANP level, BNP level, clinical symptoms and laboratory examina… Show more

“…An early study failed to find any association between clinical severity of eclampsia and BNP levels. 37 In Western societies, the most prevalent causes of ventricular impairment are hypertension and coronary artery disease. The level of BNP may reflect both the aetiology and the consequences of hypertension.…”

“…These results, which are summarized in Table 3, suggest that pregnancy reduces the size of V when expressed per kg of body weight, which is the most appropriate comparison, and that V is even lower in PE. Pregnancy decreases the diuretic response to crystalloid volume loading, but this adaptation seems to be abolished by PE, perhaps due to the increased release of atrial natriuretic peptide [2,23]. Moreover, PE doubles the clearance constant for distribution of fluid.…”

“…The initial hope of introducing CDD/ANP-99-126 as a drug for the treatment of acute renal failure (Heidbreter et al 1986;Nakamoto et al 1987;Conger et al 1991;Shaw et al 1992;Rahman et al 1994;Allgren et al 1997) was upset by the negative result of a phase III study (Scios Nova press release, unpublished). A great number of papers show the diagnostic value of natriuretic peptides in several syndromes (Arendt et al 1986;Hollister and Inagami 1991;Lerman et al 1993;Mathisen et al 1993;Buckley et al 1994;Furuhashi et al 1994;Kettunen et al 1994;Richards 1994;Yasue et al 1994;Dickstein et al 1995;Arad et al 1996;Darbar et al 1996;Holmstrom et al 1996;Lohmeier et al 1996;. To date, successful applications of natriuretic peptides are limited to, for example, the use of BNP in heart failure (Hobbs et al 1996;.…”
