Brain MRI Findings in Infantile Spasm: Outcome Correlations in a Patient Cohort

Abstract: Background: Infantile spasm is a type of pediatric seizure often associated with a negative prognosis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in categorization and neurodevelopmental outcomes in children with infantile spasm. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of the clinical charts and MRI findings of infants diagnosed with infantile spasm between December 2007 and February 2014. Results: A total of 26 children (16 males; 1.6/1) were included: 8 of unknown… Show more

“…The simirality in results depicts that the causes of epileptic spasms in the west are the same as those in Africa as they are all due to structural causes. (8) Majority of the patients 35 (85%) in this study went through a course of different medications before the symptoms subsided. Before the diagnosis of epileptic spasms was made, many patients were receiving the following medications; sodium valproate 31(78%), and phenobarbitone 9 (23%).…”

“…In a retrospective review by Khatami et al, MRI of the brain helped to establish the etiology in 73%. 72 He has demonstrated that one-third of cases considered idiopathic on clinical assessment are classified as structural-metabolic following MRI and that the MRI finding cannot predict the treatment response. 72 There could be clues in the MRI pointing to an inborn error of metabolism.…”

“…MRI abnormalities are reported in approximately 70-80% of patients with West syndrome 31,32) . The duration of spasms tends to be shorter in patients with normal MRI findings than in those with abnormal MRI findings.…”
