Brain-Gut Interactions in IBS

Abstract: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disorder with an estimated prevalence of 10–20%. Current understanding of the pathophysiology of IBS is incomplete due to the lack of a clearly identified pathological abnormality and due to the lack of reliable biomarkers. Possible mechanisms believed to contribute to IBS development and IBS like symptoms include physical stressors, such as infection or inflammation, psychological, and environmental factors, like anxiety, depression, and significant … Show more

“…Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a very common condition (incidence: 10-15% of the population) defined by abdominal pain and abdominal discomfort, associated with changes in stool frequency and form, in the absence of organic disease that is likely to explain the symptoms (Camilleri, 2012;Fichna and Storr, 2012;Izzo, 2013). Post-inflammatory IBS represents a subset of IBS, which occurs after episodes of inflammation.…”

“…4 IBS is a heterogeneous entity with etiology comprising of multiple factors such as inflammation, neuroimmune interactions, 5 gut microbiota, 6 environmental pollution, 7 and abnormal gut-brain axis. 8 This heterogeneity has a significant impact on treatment. As the disease profile may vary between the patients, the treatment should be personally tailored with regard to predominant symptoms and disease characteristics.…”

“…Jakub Fichna and Martin Storr focused their review article on the disturbances in the brain-gut axis as possible cause of IBS (Fichna and Storr, 2012). The Authors illustrated the pathophysiological mechanisms which contribute to the generation of IBS symptoms, with a special emphasis to stress, emotion and psychological factors.…”
