Brain abscess in childhood

Abstract: The author review 10 years' experience in managing brain abscess in childhood: 19 cases were treated in children from 1 to 18 years old. The etiology was rhinogenic in 5 cases, congenital heart disease in 5, hematogenous in 3, traumatic in 3, postoperative in 1, and unknown in 3 cases. Brain abscesses that developed by direct spread were located nearby the source, whereas metastatic abscesses (such as cardiogenic or hematogenous) in most cases spread via the vertebral-basilar system, usually developing in the … Show more

“…are generally isolated as a part of mixed cultures in the case of otitis media infection or suppressed immune system in the ratio of 23% -33% (9). Several studies have reported that the growth ratio of anaerobic bacteria is nearly 25-30% in the case of brain abscess, and Bacteroides and Prevotella species were the most frequently isolated bacteria (10,11). The cases in which anaerobic bacteria are accounted for the development of brain abscess generally occur after middle ear and mastoid infection (12,13).…”

“…Case study is a method used when the research question requires a deep diving into the subject (Eisenhardt, 1989;Yin, 2015). While quantitative methods focus on literal replications to enhance the conclusions, qualitative methods rely on theoretical replication (Eisenhardt, 1989;Theóphilo & Martins, 2009;Yin, 2015).…”

“…They are potentially curable but can be difficult lesions to treat. The m o r t a l i t y in brain abscess has fallen from 4 0 -5 0 % in the p r e -C T era < 12, 22, 36, 38 to 0--20% in recent years 11, 34,37,42,49,50. The difficulties that m a y be encountered in m a n a g i n g a single brain abscess increase when m o r e than one are present 51. Prior to 1975, the incidence o f multiple brain abscesses was reported as 5 -1 5 % 4, 12, 22.…”
