Bracketing in Research: A Typology

Abstract: The term bracketing has increasingly been employed in qualitative research. Although this term proliferates in scientific studies and professional journals, its application and operationalization remains vague and, often, superficial. The growing disconnection of the practice of bracketing in research from its origins in phenomenology has resulted in its frequent reduction to a formless technique, value stance, or black-box term. Mapping the subtle theoretical and philosophical underpinnings of bracketing will… Show more

“…Question 4 interview response data were analysed using the systematic phenomenological approach of inspecting and synthesising its contained 'meant' and 'experienced' meanings (Bednall, 2006). This process continued until all Question 4 data had been intuited and unpacked (Gearing, 2004;Groenewald, 2004;Patton, 1990). Finally, the study's developed themes and subthemes were compared where appropriate to research findings within the existing body of ASD literature.…”

“…These concepts have been subject to intense contestation and Husserl himself never precisely defined what these processes were; phenomenological researchers employ the terms in a plethora of ways (Gearing 2004). The notion of 'epochē', from the Greek to abstain, stop, or keep a distance from, dates back to the ancient Skeptics and was used by Husserl to denote the attempt to suspend all taken-for-granted assumptions and presuppositions about a phenomenon.…”

“…The researchers also implemented a reflexive bracketing analysis approach. This was chosen in order "to limit presuppositions, biases, assumptions, theories or previous experience, to see and describe the phenomenon" [39] . This scientific form of bracketing was chosen because it facilitated the researchers to have thoughtful and conscious self-awareness [39] .…”
