Box‐folded four‐element MIMO antenna system for LTE handsets

Abstract: A multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system for mobile handsets is presented. The proposed MIMO system consists of four identical box-folded planar inverted-F antenna. A broad operating band (1.84-2.69 GHz) with overall MIMO system dimensions of 136 × 68.8 × 6 mm 3 and an element size of only 10 × 10 × 5 mm 3 can be achieved. Lower than −14.2 dB isolation between any two of the elements has been obtained at the whole operating band. The correlation coefficient, radiation pattern and antenna gain are… Show more

“…In [2,3], printed monopole antennas introduced many parasitic strips and complicated structures, covering only GSM/ UMTS/LTE bands. In [4], although the proposed antenna consists of four box-folded PIFA antennas, the operating band only cover PCS1900/UMTS/LTE2300/ LTE2500, which is far below the requirement in the further 5G communication systems. Recently, a wideband 3D folded dipole antenna with feed line was folded outside of the ground plane to achieve about 83% fractional bandwidth covering 1.9-4.63 GHz in [6].…”

“…In order to solve this problem, multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna was introduced [2]. Moreover, the communication quality and channel capacity of MIMO antenna can be improved by increasing the number of transmitter antennas and receiver antennas without extra radiation power and spectrum bandwidth [3]. However, when two or more antenna elements work closely to each other, the mutual coupling between the antenna elements becomes strong that the MIMO antenna cannot reach high isolation and wide operating band without taking any method [4].…”

“…In [11] ten antenna elements are used with ECC (< 0.1) to operate only in the frequency range (3.4-3.8 GHz). In [12] four antenna elements are used with box-folded planar inverted-F antenna to operate only in the frequency range (1.85-2.69 GHz) and reasonable ECC (< 0.03).…”
