Bowel Inflammation as Measured by Fecal Calprotectin

Abstract: The mechanisms by which the lifestyle risk factors obesity, physical inactivity, and low fiber intake predispose to colorectal cancer (CRC) are unclear. Chronic bowel inflammation predisposes to malignancy in cases of inflammatory bowel disease. Many lifestyle risk factors for CRC are associated with evidence of systemic inflammation as indicated by circulating levels of Creactive protein (CRP), but it is unknown how this relates to inflammation at tissue level. Little is known about the degree of bowel inflam… Show more

“…The high calprotectin levels seen in some people with IBS are perhaps not surprising, as raised levels have been reported in a random sample of the general population by Poullis et al 177 They examined the association between lifestyle factors associated with colorectal cancer, and FC levels, in a group of people aged 50-70 years, and found that one-quarter had calprotectin levels above the upper limit of normal of DOI: 10.3310/hta17550 HEALTH TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT 2013 VOL. 17 NO.…”

“…Sensitivity estimates of calprotectin did improve when a single outcome was evaluated in our study [ Patients with diverticulosis frequently had increased calprotectin concentrations in our study, possibly due to occult mild diverticulitis, contributing to the lower specificity. High concentrations of calprotectin have also been reported in healthy individuals and may be related to various individual variables including age, diet, and medication use (e.g., nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs) (15,31,32 ).…”

“…27 Other causes for the observed changes could include alterations in gut flora and changes in diet and lifestyle differences with age. 25 Faecal calprotectin concentrations are known to be considerably elevated in infants 28 and evidence on the effect of diet is conflicting. 22 Lactoferrin is present in breast milk and is found in the faeces of breast-fed infants.…”
