Bovine spongiform encephalopathy in Northern Ireland: epidemiological observations 1988-1990

Abstract: This study describes the epidemiological features of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in Northern Ireland where the first case occurred in November 1988. They were very similar to those observed in Great Britain except that the annual incidence of BSE in 1990 in Northern Ireland, 2.3 confirmed cases per 10,000 adult cows, was approximately one 10th of that in Great Britain. The findings were also consistent with the current hypothesis that affected cattle had been exposed to a scrapie-like agent via catt… Show more

“…By 1 January 1997 there had been 1746 BSE cases in Northern Ireland (NI). The course of the NI epidemic to date has been described by Denny et al (1992) and Denny & Heuston (1997). The herd of NI is much smaller than that of GB but has shown the same trend of declining size over the last 20 years.…”

“…This lag could have resulted from later initial infections in NI compared to GB, but could also re£ect the six month interval between the introduction of the bans on the use of ruminant protein in ruminant feed in GB and NI (July 1988 andJanuary 1989, respectively). The epidemiology of BSE in NI has been described in detail in Denny et al (1992) and Denny & Hueston (1997).…”

“…A database containing data on all confirmed BSE cases in Northern Ireland is maintained by DANI staff. The epidemiology of BSE in Northern Ireland has been described in detail in Denny et al (1992) , Denny and Hueston (1997), and Ferguson et al (1998) . The BSE epidemic in Northern Ireland provides a unique opportunity to compare the epidemiologic patterns of BSE observed in Great Britain with an independently collected data set.…”
