Bovine neonate natural killer cells are fully functional and highly responsive to interleukin-15 and to NKp46 receptor stimulation

Abstract: Natural killer (NK) cells are key components of the innate immune system with their killing and cytokine producing abilities. Bovine NK cells have been characterized as NKp46+/CD3− lymphocytes, but little is known about these cells in neonatal calves. As the newborn calf, with an insufficiently developed acquired immunity, has to employ the innate immune system, we wanted to investigate whether neonate NK cells had the same characteristics as cells from older calves. Freshly isolated neonate and calf NK cells … Show more

“…However, cattle are large enough to handle and feed at a very young age and are often used in age-related and diet-influenced immunity studies [14, 16, 3539]. Furthermore, the current study and other studies suggest that bovine lymphocytes are predictive for the influence of polyphenols on human lymphocytes [3, 8].…”

“…Steps were taken to limit such confounders: Laboratory analyses were carried out using standardized protocols by the same person, often repeated several times. All animals were recruited from a similar age group since age has proven to be a significant variable in NK cell biology ( 54 56 ). Finally, no breed influence was detected in parameters measured in PBMC (Figures 2 and 3 ).…”

“…The specialized follicle associated epithelium (FAE) that overlies PPs is capable of transporting luminal antigens [ 29 ] to the underlying immune cells to promote a tolerogenic or an inflammatory response, which will be set in action in the lamina propria. Our aim was to get an insight into the early local immune response in the different sections of the small intestine and associated lymphoid tissues of lambs during the neonatal period with a particular focus on NK cells, which we have shown to be active in neonatal calves [ 30 ], and CD8 T lymphocytes, that have been shown to be important in controlling C. parvum infection in humans [ 31 ].…”
