Bovine lactoferrin allergenicity as studied in murine model of allergy

Abstract: In our study, we tried to investigate the allergenic properties of bovine lactoferrin (bLf) at different doses. The lactoferrin (LF) allergenicity was explored using murine model of allergy through measuring anti-LF IgG, IgG1 and IgE antibodies (Abs) responses and by in vivo anaphylactic reactions in LF sensitized mice. A histological examination of intestinal lamina propria was performed to assess gut inflammation. Four groups of mice (Balb/ c) were sensitized intraperitoneally to bLf using different doses (1… Show more

“…It has been shown previously that individuals with CMA have high levels of IgG (Høst et al, 1992). A high level of IgG was also observed in mice immunized with bovine lactoferrin (Negaoui et al, 2016). Our experiment showed that both casein fractions induced a high level of serumspecific IgG and IgA and similar levels of fecal IgA.…”

“…Concerning the in vivo reactions, all groups developed clinical symptoms of anaphylactic reactions at different stages. Their findings show that LF-sensitised mice at 5% and 10% developed important clinical symptoms after intraperitoneal challenge with LF (Negaoui et al, 2016).…”

“…Together with lactoferrin, bovine serum albumin is characterised by a high number of disulphide bridges ( Table 1 ), making their tertiary structure highly stable even under denaturing conditions [ 64 ]. Lactoferrin is a protein not registered as an allergen in the AllergenNomenclature [ 56 ], however, human and animal experimental studies showed their ability to induce allergic reactions [ 65 , 66 , 67 ].…”
