Bovine Glycomacropeptide Is Anti-Inflammatory in Rats with Hapten-Induced Colitis

Abstract: Milk kappa-casein-derived glycomacropeptide has immunomodulatory and bacterial toxin binding effects. The intestinal anti-inflammatory activity of glycomacropeptide was assessed in trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid-induced colitis in rats. Rats were administered glycomacropeptide daily starting either 2 d before (pretreatment) or 3 h after (post-treatment) colitis induction. Pretreatment with glycomacropeptide had a dose-dependent anti-inflammatory effect, characterized by lower body weight loss, decreased anorexia… Show more

“…Monnai, Horimoto, and Otani (1998) showed that dietary CMP had a significant suppressing activity towards the production of IgG antibodies, helping to down-regulate the immune response to antigens in newborn mammals. CMP also displayed anti-inflammatory activity in rats with hapten-induced colitis, probably through the inhibition of the activation of immune cells (Daddaoua et al, 2005). Because of these findings, the use of CMP in immunosuppressive foods and for the management of inflammatory bowel disease has been proposed.…”

“…Bovine milk is a rich source of proteins and peptides that are important in immune system development and function. For example, glycomacropeptide derived from kappa casein, has anti-inflammatory activity in a rat model of colitis, suggesting potential for IBD treatment (Daddaoua et al, 2005). Oligosaccharides from goat milk have been shown to enhance recovery from colonic inflammatory damage in a rat model of colitis and may therefore also be useful for treatment of IBD (Daddaoua et al, 2006).…”

“…We have shown that BGMP decreases the expression of IL-1b, IL-1ra, TNF and IL-17 in ileitis/ colitis and therefore we can conclude that the mechanism of action of BGMP probably involves Th17 cells, macrophages and T cells but not Th1 cells (30,61) .…”
