Bovine chromosome 4 workshop: consensus and comprehensive linkage maps

Abstract: The report of the bovine chromosome 4 (BTA4) workshop is presented. Six laboratories contributed a total of 30,168 informative meioses from 62 loci. Twenty-two loci were typed by at least two independent laboratories and were used to construct a consensus linkage map of BTA4. The remaining 40 loci were subsequently incorporated into a comprehensive map. The sex-averaged consensus map covered 131.4 cM. The female map was 124.3 cM in length, while the male map was 134.3 cM. The comprehensive sex-averaged map spa… Show more

“…The most likely order using the `ALL' function of CRI‐MAP (version 2.4) was BL1024‐RM188‐RM067‐BM6458‐IGFBP3‐BMS648‐BR6303. This assignment is in agreement with the radiation hybrid map 5 however, the comprehensive linkage map places IGFBP3 between RM067 and BM6458 .…”

“…In contrast, a number of cattle linkage maps exist that have been developed with different sets of families and different sets of loci (Ma et al 1996;Barendse et al 1997;Kappes et al 1997). As a consequence, some difficulties are experienced in moving between the cattle maps to predict relative positions of loci, and several cattle mapping workshops have been held to address these issues (Taylor et al 1998;Casas et al 1999;Gu et al 2000).…”

“…BTA1 and BTA21 (Taylor et al, 1998;Barendse et al, 1993), but not for others, e.g. BTA4 (Casas et al, 1999). It will hence be interesting to determine if a sex-specific difference in map distance will correlate with differences in synapsis initiation in cattle.…”
