Bovine Adenovirus Type 3 Pneumonia in Dexamethasone-treated Calves

Abstract: Abstract. The effects of immunosuppression were examined in 1.5-month-old calves that were given dexamethasone (DM) before endobronchial inoculation with bovine adenovirus type 3 (BAV-3). Immunohistopathologically, severe necrotizing bronchiolitis with eosinophilic and basophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies was observed both in DM-treated 1.5-month-old infected calves and in non-DM-treated 7-day-old infected calves. These inclusion bodies were correlated with the detection of BAV-3 antigen and viral particle… Show more

“…We used the BALF collected from calves inoculated with BAV-3, the pathology of which was reported by Narita et al [24]. Briefly, three 1-week-old calves and three 1.5-month-old calves were given 10 ml (10 3.0 TCID 50 /0.1 ml) of BAV-3 suspension by endobronchial inoculation in the right main bronchus of the caudal lung lobe using a bronchoscope (Olympus type 10; Olympus, Tokyo, Japan) under treatment with atropine hydrochloride (0.02 mg/kg, intramuscularly) and anesthetization with xylazine (0.3 mg/kg, intravenously).…”

“…11 Unfortunately, only lung tissue was available for histologic evaluation in our case; hence, we cannot confirm if thymic hemorrhage and lymphoid depletion were present. The microscopic lesions observed in our case most closely resemble those observed in BAdV3-infected cattle, 3,10 namely necrosuppurative bronchointerstitial pneumonia with prominent INIBs. The lesions also resemble those described in a case of adenoviral pneumonia in a reindeer caused by a novel virus that is closely related to both OdAdV2 and BAdV3.…”

“…11 Similar gross lesions have been described in calves infected with BAdV3. 10 Histologic lesions of experimental OdAdV2 infection in deer included mild neutrophilic bronchiolitis, thymic hemorrhage, lymphoid depletion, and hyperplasia of bronchiolar-associated lymphoid tissues (BALT) with no mention of INIBs. 11 Unfortunately, only lung tissue was available for histologic evaluation in our case; hence, we cannot confirm if thymic hemorrhage and lymphoid depletion were present.…”
