Boundary Objects in Design Studies: Reflections on the Collaborative Creation of Isochrone Maps

Abstract: We propose to take an artifact‐centric approach to design studies by leveraging the concept of boundary object. Design studies typically focus on processes and articulate design decisions in a project‐specific context with a goal of transferability. We argue that design studies could benefit from paying attention to the material conditions in which teams collaborate to reach design outcomes. We report on a design study of isochrone maps following cartographic generalization principles. Focusing on boundary obj… Show more

“…Each prior paper had its own focus, and this backstory paper allows us to step back, think, and reflect. Our methodological approach might be similar to those suggested for design studies [43,47]. However, backed up by our sequels-our quantitative studies-we felt free to embrace a more narrative writing style than is typical.…”

“…Another important characteristic is the arrangement of how to operate and collaborate [109]. As Vuillemot et al [110] put it, "Groups can work on common objects locally, making them more tailored to their local use and needs, i.e., something that is not interdisciplinary, and then share it back in a way that works across the various groups". It is challenging to exactly predict how arrangement will look like, as several disciplines use the variables.…”
