Bound states of D-branes and the non-abelian Born-Infeld action

Abstract: We attempt to settle the issue as to what is the correct non-abelian generalisation of the Born-Infeld action, via a consideration of the two-loop β-function for the non-abelian background gauge field in open string theory. An analysis of the bosonic theory alone shows the recent proposal of Tseytlin's [1] to be somewhat lacking. For the superstring, however, this proposal would seem to be correct, and not just within the approximation used in [1]. Since it is this latter case that is relevant to the descripti… Show more

“…One possibility is to construct DBI monopoles by demanding that the usual Yang-Mills-Higgs BPS relations also hold in the DBI case [6]. This amounts to define a Higgs field Lagrangian in a Born-Infeld-like way (i.e., with the scalar kinetic energy and potential terms also under a square root) in such a way that the model have a supersymmetric extension [4], [23]- [25]. One can then prove that the BPS relations coincide with those arising in the Yang-Mills-Higgs case [12], so that the resulting DBI monopole solutions are identical to the well-honored Prasad-Sommerfield exact solutions and have no specific features resulting from the DBI dynamics.…”

“…There are problems with summing over worldsheet genera in the Dirichlet picture, which could be related to the breaking of the T -duality symmetry from an anomaly in the nonabelian case [15,16]. Modular logarithmic divergences appear in matter field amplitudes when the string propagator L0 is computed with Dirichlet boundary conditions.…”
