Bouffée Délirante and ICD-10 Acute and Transient Psychoses: A Comparative Study

Abstract: There are indications that a diagnosis of bouffée délirante carries a somewhat better prognosis than ATPD in general. However, the low frequency of operationally diagnosed bouffée délirante suggests that the criteria might be too narrow.

“…These changes would bring the ATPD category closer to non-affective acute remitting psychoses [110] as its temporal criterion would reflect the 3-months’ duration of APPD, but it seems questionable whether APPD may be itself a reliable diagnosis owing to intrinsic instability (that is, symptoms change in type and intensity daily or even more frequently). Little evidence also supports the continuity between APPD and the clinical concepts to which it refers such as bouffée délirante and cycloid psychosis [120123].…”

“…10 Comparative studies have revealed ATPD has little continuity with its apparent historical predecessors. 11,12 Acute and transient psychotic disorders is a composite category encompassing six subtypes, in which symptom resolution is expected to occur within 1 or 3 months in order to exclude schizophrenia and persistent delusional disorder respectively. Furthermore, premorbid adjustment and long-term functional outcome have been demonstrated to be fairly similar to those of the general population and better than those observed in schizophrenia.…”

“…It is common in younger people and especially males. Bouffee Delirante has a relatively good prognosis as compared to other acute psychotic disorders as reported by Pillman et al (2003).…”
