Botulinum toxin type A versus anticholinergics for cervical dystonia

Abstract: The available evidence suggests that BtA injections provide more objective and subjective benefit than trihexyphenidyl to patients with cervical dystonia. We could not draw any conclusions about other anticholinergic drugs. Future trials should explore the role of anticholinergic drugs in patients that do not get benefit with BtA.

Interestingly, intramuscular injections of botulinum toxin A offer higher efficacy and fewer side effects than other treatments 514. Botulinum toxin A is a highly potent neurotoxin that is used to treat various diseases including hemifacial spasm, spasticity, dystonia, and achalasia.…”

Treatment by botulinum toxin A is shown to improve the quality of life of CD patients 3,516. Botulinum toxin A is approved by the Food and Drug Administration of the United States for CD treatment and is recommended by most guidelines as a first-line treatment worldwide.…”
