Bottled, Filtered, and Tap Water Use in Latino and Non-Latino Children

Abstract: Many Latino families avoid drinking tap water because they fear it causes illness. Unnecessary use of bottled and filtered water is costly and may result in adverse dental health outcomes. Physicians should provide guidance to families regarding the safety, low cost, and dental health benefits of drinking tap water.

“…The need is evident for a state-wide concerted effort to reach Spanish speaking families regarding the availability of fluoride varnish and how they can obtain it for their children. These findings are similar to other surveys or focus groups of Latinas in the U.S. indicating that the lack of knowledge and understanding about fluoride and it benefits is widespread [9,12,13]. This lack of knowledge suggests strongly that all groups who interact with these families--medical and dental providers, preschool groups such as WIC and Head Start staff--must be educated and subsequently spend time on the topic with their Spanish speaking patients.…”

“…Mistrust of tap water safety could be a risk factor for SSB intake among Hispanics and may result in low intake of plain water among many minority populations. Given the relatively common prevalence of this belief among Hispanics suggested by the present and other studies (10,11) , concerns regarding tap water safety may be an important determinant of SSB intake among Hispanics. Public health efforts to decrease intake of SSB through promotion of plain drinking water should recognize the role of perceptions regarding tap water safety on water and SSB intake among minority populations.…”

“…29 Our participants' possible distrust of tap water may have accounted for children drinking more bottled water than tap water. Future exploration into participants' perceptions about tap water will help inform future health promotion education.…”
