Botanical origin discrimination of Greek honeys: physicochemical parameters versus Raman spectroscopy

Abstract: BACKGROUND: The authenticity of honey is of high importance since it affects its commercial value. The discrimination of the origin of honey is of prime importance to reinforce consumer trust. In this study, four chemometric models were developed based on the physicochemical parameters according to European and Greek legislation and one using Raman spectroscopy to discriminate Greek honey samples from three commercial monofloral botanical sources. RESULTS:The results of physicochemical (glucose, fructose, elec… Show more

“…This is approximately the same accuracy rate obtained in our study using different variables. FT-Raman spectra combined with PCA or LDA have also proved to be useful to classify monofloral honeys with a high degree of accuracy [ 29 , 30 , 31 ].…”

“…PCA was used for dimensionality reduction before ML treatment using three ML algorithms, namely, radial basis function (RBF) network, SVM and random forest (RF), to predict honey floral origin. Furthermore, FT-Raman spectroscopy has shown to be a simple, rapid and nondestructive technique that, in combination with proper PCA or LDA models, could be successfully adopted to identify the botanical origins of some honey types [ 29 , 30 , 31 ]. The same technique resulted in being useful to detect adulterations of pure beeswax with paraffin or microcrystalline waxes [ 32 ].…”

“…Α total of 81 monofloral thyme honey samples were obtained during the 2019-2020 harvest years. The botanical origin was first assessed by the beekeepers and confirmed after physiochemical [33,34] and melissopalynological [35] analysis as previously described [36]. Honey samples were stored in hermetically closed glass bottles and kept in A test set of 80 monofloral thyme samples was submitted for validation of the optimization model and their quantitative analysis are presented in Table S1.…”

“…Irrespective of these enforced regulations to ascertain the exact origin via scientific means, a number of these parameters are somewhat correlated with large-scale dispersion. Therefore, the resulting chemometric models, using LDA, which are based on physicochemical parameters, are unreliable [4]. Furthermore, it should be considered that these types of analyses Appl.…”
