Botanical Investigation of Fallopia Dumetorum (L.) Holub (Polygonaceae) and Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of its Polyphenolic Compounds

Abstract: Background: Considering the continuous need to fi nd new sources of polyphenolic compounds, we performed a pharmacognostical examination of the species Fallopia dumetorum (L.) Holub sin. Polygonum dumetorum L. (Polygonaceae). The plant is common in the plain regions of Romania and has not been exploited therapeutically. Materials and method: Microscopic examination was performed on cross-sections, surface preparations and on powder obtained from the aerial parts of the fl owering plant. Qualitative chemical an… Show more

“…Three characteristic flavonoid structures have also been found in this species: falloconvolin A and B and quercetin-3-O-(2-E-esinapoxyl)-glucopyranoside (31). In F. aubertii, glycosides of quercetin, kaempferol, apigenin, luteolin, myricetin and several chromones structures have been identified (29,32,33). With the exception of rhamnetin, isorhamnetin and characteristic flavonoids, all other flavonoids have also been found in F. dumetorum (28).…”

“…In this study, we obtained six extracts from three plant species of the genus Fallopia. As F. convolvulus and F. dumetorum have a high TFC and TPC (42,43), we prepared only the hydroethanolic 50% extract (C ha and D ha ). From F. aubertii, four extracts were obtained: one from stems and leaves extracted with ethanol 50% (AH ha ) and three extracts from flowers with water (AF w ), ethanol 50% (AF ha ) and ethanol 96% (AF e ).…”

“…The newly compounds were tested for potential cytotoxicity using an alternative methods on invertebrate organisms, Daphnia magna. This test is rapid, simple and cost-efficiently and can predict biological activities such as anticancer and analgesic activities [11,[18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…The biological activity of the synthesized compounds was evaluated using Daphnia magna assay, an alternative method for prescreening of cytotoxicity activity [17,18]. Along with other bioassays, this method is widely used for toxicity risk assessment of new compounds, plant extracts, and pharmaceutical substances [19][20][21].…”
