Boston Naming Test: Shortened Versions for Use in Alzheimer's Disease

Abstract: Four new 15-item versions of the Boston Naming Test (BNT), a 15-item version used by the Consortium To Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease (CERAD), and three 30-item BNT versions were studied in 26 subjects with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and 26 nondemented, neurologically normal controls. The four 15-item versions were statistically equivalent. On each version, controls performed significantly better than AD subjects, and scores on each could be extrapolated to a complete 60-item BNT score. The CERAD v… Show more

“…The nonmemory domains were: Attention, as defined by digit span, 14 visual span, 14 and auditory detection 15 ; Language, as defined by modified Boston naming 16 and category fluency 17 (animals and food subtasks); Visuomotor speed, as defined by symbol digit modality test, 18 digit cancellation, 19 and maze ask 20 ; and Visuoconstruction, as defined by Weschler Memory Scale-Revised 14 visual reproduction copy task, clock drawing, 21 and Weschler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised 22 subtest of block design.…”

“…Immediate and delayed recognition trials (Faces I and II) from the Wechsler Memory Scale III were also administered (Wechsler, 1997). Other tasks were Letter-Number Sequencing and Block Design tests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale III (Wechsler, 1991), category fluency (animal naming) (Troyer, 2000), a 30-item version of the Boston Naming Test (Mack et al, 1992), the oral Symbol-Digit Modalities test (Smith, 1991), the Trail Making Test Part B (Reitan, 1958), and Judgment of Line Orientation (Benton et al, 1978). Details regarding test administration and normative values in this population have been reported (Clark et al, 2004b;2004a;Elkadi et al, 2006b;2006a).…”

“…In Wave 1 of the CCMS study, we used the 15-item CERAD version (BNT-15; Welsh et al, 1994). In Wave 2 of study, we switched to the more sensitive split half version of the original test (BNT-30), administering every other test item from the 60 item stimuli (Saxton et al, 2000;Mack et al, 1992). Scores range from 0-15 on CERAD version and 0-30 on split half version.…”
