The pressure-induced transformation of diatomic nitrogen into non-molecular polymeric phases may produce potentially useful high-energy-density materials. We combine first-principles calculations with structure searching to predict a new class of nitrogen-rich boron nitrides with a stoichiometry of B 3 N 5 that are stable or metastable relative to solid N 2 and h-BN at ambient pressure. The most stable phase at ambient pressure has a layered structure (h-B 3 N 5 ) containing hexagonal B 3 N 3 layers sandwiched with intercalated freely rotating N 2 molecules. At 15 GPa, a three-dimensional C222 1 structure with single N-N bonds becomes the most stable.This pressure is much lower than that required for triple-to-single bond transformation in pure solid nitrogen (110 GPa). More importantly, C222 1 -B 3 N 5 is metastable, and can be recovered under ambient conditions. Its energy density of ~3.44 kJ/g makes it a potential high-energy-density material. In addition, stress-strain calculations estimate a Vicker's hardness of ~44 GPa. Structure searching reveals a new clathrate sodalite-like BN structure that is metastable under ambient conditions.

Özet. Bu çalışmada, O'Connor yöntemi ile sentezlenen hegzagonal bor nitrürün ısısal davranışları incelenmiştir. Bor nitrür kavramsal olarak karbon yapısına benzemekte fakat benzer karbon allottropundan daha yüksek sıcaklık değerlerine dayanmaktadır. Bor nitrür aynı zamanda yüksek sıcaklıktaki kararlı yapısından dolayı polimerlere ve diğer endüstriyel ürünlere katkı maddesi olarak eklenmektedir. Ortalama kristal boyutları birbirinden farklı (17, 27 ve 37 nm) bor nitrürlerin fiziksel özellikleri de farklı olacağı düşünülmektedir. Bu ürünlerin yüksek sıcaklık kararlılıkları termal gravimetrik analiz ile incelenmiş, açık atmosferde 1100 ºC'ye kadar dayanabildiği gözlenmiştir. Bu ürünlerin 0-1100 ºC aralığındaki kimyasal ve endüstriyel işlemlerde kullanılabileceği anlaşılmıştır. 1100 ºC nin üzerindeki sıcaklıklarda hexagonal bor nitrür yapısının gaz ürünlere dönüşerek tamamen bozulduğu belirlenmiştir.Anahtar Kelimeler: Hegzagonal Bor Nitrür, Termal Gravimetrik Analiz, Termal Bozunma Thermal behavior of hexagonal boron nitride in the open atmosphereAbstract. In this study, thermal behavior of hexagonal boron nitride which was synthesized by O'Conner method was determined. Boron nitride similar to the carbon structure however it was stable at the elevated temperature than the homologous carbon allotropes. Boron nitride is used as additive to the polymer and industrial products due to its stability at high temperatures. It is thought that physical properties of boron nitride are different with different kind of average crystal units (17, 27, and 37 nm). High temperature stability of these compounds investigated by thermal gravimetric analysis and it is found that they were stable until 1100 ºC in open atmosphere. It is understood that these compounds could be used at a range of 0 to 1100 ºC in chemical and industrial processes. Hexagonal boron nitride structure completely decomposed by convention to gaseous products above 1100 ºC temperatures.
