Boron nitride colloidal solutions, ultralight aerogels and freestanding membranes through one-step exfoliation and functionalization

Abstract: Manufacturing of aerogels and membranes from hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is much more difficult than from graphene or graphene oxides because of the poor dispersibility of h-BN in water, which limits its exfoliation and preparation of colloidal solutions. Here, a simple, one-step mechano-chemical process to exfoliate and functionalize h-BN into highly water-dispersible, few-layer h-BN containing amino groups is presented. The colloidal solutions of few-layer h-BN can have unprecedentedly high concentrations… Show more

“…It is known that ball-milling of h-BN with a lot of different materials can generate functionalized h-BN nanosheets [39]. For instance, a one-step method for the preparation and functionalization of few-layer BN was developed based on urea-assisted solid exfoliation of commercially available h-BN [40]. Such kind of functionalized BN nanosheets are attractive for a lot of applications such as polymer matrix composites [41], ion conductors [42], and hydrogen storage [43].…”

“…The peak at 190.3 eV was found in both the BNNTs and NH 2 Ph-BNNTs, which was assigned to B-N in BNNTs [24,27]. There was another peak obtained from the peak-fitting; however, for this peak BNNTs and NH 2 Ph-BNNTs showed slight different binding energy values.…”

“…The N1s of BNNTs perfectly presented a single peak with binding energy at 397.9 eV, corresponding to B-N-B [26,27]. Obviously, the N1s peak of NH 2 Ph-BNNTs was not a single peak.…”

“…A further reduction in the temperature required for BN aerogel synthesis was reported by Lei et al 119 Lei et al succeeded in producing aqueous colloidal suspensions of BN which form hydrogels at room temperature. To achieve this, the BN powder is ball milled with urea to both exfoliate and functionalize the sheets with amine groups, which renders the BN water dispersible.…”
