Boron Dipyrromethene Chromophores: Next Generation Triplet Acceptors/Annihilators for Low Power Upconversion Schemes

Abstract: In the present study, the red-light absorbing platinum(II) tetraphenyltetrabenzoporphyrin (PtTPBP) was used as a triplet sensitizer in conjunction with two distinct iodophenyl-bearing BODIPY derivatives independently serving as triplet acceptors/annihilators poised for photon upconversion based on triplet-triplet annihilation. In deaerated benzene solutions, extremely stable and high quantum efficiency green (Phi(UC) = 0.0313 +/- 0.0005) and yellow (Phi(UC) = 0.0753 +/- 0.0036) upconverted emissions were obser… Show more

“…They undergo base-catalyzed Knoevenagel type condensation with aldehydes. This method has been used in synthesis of NIR BODIPY dyes [36]. Condensation of compound 3 with 4-methoxybenzaldehyde in the presence of piperidine and glacial acetic acid produced the monosubstituted product 5 as a blue solid (18% yield).…”

“…[27][28][29] Compared to the development of triplet sensitizers, much less attention has been paid to the development of triplet acceptors. [30][31][32][33] To date, triplet acceptors are limited to a few commercially available compounds. In the process of TTA upconversion, the sensitizer absorbs light and transfers it to the acceptor.…”
