People worldwide hold varied beliefs and mindsets due to different cultural backgrounds. Chinese culture is feathered with Confucianism emphasizing the harmony between man and nature. In contrast, Western culture has the tradition of objectively thinking about the world as a man separated from nature. With the development of globalization, translation is becoming more and more important. In this case, domestication perfectly fulfills gaps caused by civilization differences since the essence of it is to combine local cultures with foreign ones, thus eliminating misunderstandings. However, scholars like Lawrence Venuti strongly oppose this method for the reason that they believe domestication always misleads people by using dominant political opinions. In this paper, researchers mainly focus on the importance of balance in domestication and the possible consequences of excessive domestication. By analyzing several both successful and negative examples of domestication in literary and commercial aspects, researchers want to prove the effectiveness of appropriate domesticating translation. Through the analysis of specific examples, it is able for people to find out secrets of controlling the extends of the usage of domesticating translation by following effective examples and drawbacks and limitations of domestication itself.

The article presents a discussion of Finnish-Estonian author Sofi Oksanen’s 2019 novel Dog Park (Koirapuisto), a social and psychological thriller about two Ukrainian women working in the Ukrainian fertility industry, offering surrogacy services to Western clients. The novel explores some of the new modes of exchange and cultural encounter that were established between Ukraine and the West after the collapse of the Soviet Union. It presents a reflection of the social and human consequences of the transition from communism to capitalism but is also a story of how the legacy of Cold War geopolitics continues to shape European mental geographies and experiences at the intersection of East and West. Drawing on concepts from human geography and postcolonial studies, the article offers a reading of Oksanen’s novel focusing especially on how the novel negotiates these geopolitical shifts as well as the position of the Nordic countries on the changing European map.

This article presents a critical review of a bourgeoning interdisciplinary research trend in the English-language literature that integrates Translation Studies and Memory Studies. After sketching its emergence over the past three decades or so, the article recounts main theoretical contributions in this research trend to explain how scholars promote an idea of translation as memory and expound on political and ethical issues. It then reports on analytical scholarship on specific cases of translation that take on different memory themes, including (1) the Holocaust, genocide and mass killing, (2) war, conflict, and other dark memories, and (3) traditions and sites of memory. Finally, to anticipate a more diversified prospect of the research trend, it is suggested that researchers adopt more concepts and theories from recent transcultural memory studies, and attend more to memory cultures, themes, and practices in different, especially non-Western, contexts.
