“…Overall, three studies [all of moderate quality (mean quality score 6.3)] prospectively investigated the association between CM and NSSI. Kaplan and colleagues ( 33 ) reported that abused individuals were at increased risk of NSSI at baseline. Isohookana and colleagues ( 13 ) found, in their study with 508 adolescent inpatients, that maltreatment, and specifically sexual abuse, was associated with an increased risk of NSSI and suicide attempts, although only in females.…”

“…Among nonpsychiatric college students, the majority (about 79%) of those engaging in NSSI report childhood abuse or neglect [8]. While longitudinal studies have partly confirmed an association between childhood adversity and NSSI [9][10][11], the exact pathways between childhood adversity and NSSI remain unclear [12][13][14]. Some studies have reported on related risk factors explaining the association (e.g., increased risk of anxiety disorders and assault victimization [13] or poor family functioning [12]), whereas others provided evidence for a direct association between childhood abuse and NSSI [14].…”
